PS Resort Comparison

The Poland Historical Society will host an Open House on Saturday, August 13, to unveil an aerial photo mosaic depicting the town of Poland in 1953. The event will take place between noon and 4:00pm in the School  House Museum at the Municipal Complex.

The aerial photos in the mosaic were captured by the James W. Sewall Company; a well-known aerial photography and consulting firm based in Old Town, Maine. The company was founded in 1840, and still operates today as Sewall.

In May, 2020, Sewall generously donated its archive of historic, aerial photos to the Raymond H. Fogler Library at the University of Maine at Orono. The collection consists of more than 3000 rolls of film containing approximately one million images. The Fogler Library has made a select portion of these negatives available to the public as large format photographic images.

The mosaic was assembled from 10 separate images covering an approximate area of 88 square miles. The assembled mosaic is approximately 5’ wide by 3’ high. Viewers will get a birds-eye-view of changes that have taken place since the images were captured nearly 70 years ago. Following the Open House, the mosaic will be on permanent display in the School House Museum.
