RSU 16 Budget Brainstorming Session April 5, 8:30 - 9:30 AM at PRHS/WMS Library OR 6:00 - 7:00PM in the PRHS/WMS Cafeteria.

RSU 16 Budget Brainstorming Session

March 27, 2023

Dear Communities and Families of RSU 16,

As previously shared:

The goals for this year’s school district budget are to pay for all the predicted contractual salary and benefit obligations ($1,236,076), initial interest payment ($185,808) for the bond to fix the elementary school heating systems, and maintain comparable personnel levels to operate three separate elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. This year’s budget request is $28,069,460. This is up $2,194,845 from last year. This is an 8.48% increase from year-to-year.

There are several factors that we have no control over. Our State subsidy has decreased by $47,000. The valuation has increased by $814,000. RSU 16 has had a decrease of economically disadvantaged students which have resulted in a decrease in funding of $380,000 from year-to-year.

New information:

The Town of Poland and Town of Minot provided the tax impact. In Poland, based upon a $100,000 home, the additional school tax increase will be $126.90.  In Minot, based upon a $100,000 home the additional school tax increase will be $116.00.  The Town of Mechanic Falls is completing a re-evaluation, so tax impact could not be calculated.

As we face various challenges in our district, we recognize the importance of collaborative problem-solving to find the best solutions. We are therefore organizing a brainstorming session to bring together community members from across the district to share their insights and ideas.

The in-person brainstorming session will be held on April 5, 8:30 - 9:30 AM at PRHS/WMS Library OR 6:00 - 7:00PM in the PRHS/WMS Cafeteria. We will provide all necessary materials for the session. The opening session will be facilitated by Ken and Amy, and RSU 16 facilitators will guide the process of brainstorming and idea generation in small groups.

Our goal is to identify solutions that address district-wide challenges and improve student outcomes. We will be addressing challenges such as transportation, teacher shortage, class size inequities, and our aging buildings. We believe that your input and ideas are valuable, and we encourage you to come prepared to contribute your thoughts and suggestions.

We look forward to your participation and contribution to this important brainstorming session.

Sincerely,

Ken and Amy
