Description

The Poland Town Forest and Bragdon Hill property comprise the Bragdon Hill Conservation Area. Well-maintained trails cross over streams with the help of bog bridges, and trails are well marked by blazes on trees and other natural features. Three different loops are possible by following each of the three different colored blazes. Interesting natural features include the town's largest Hemlock tree and large boulders located along the edge of the trail. Located at the height of land between The Tripp Pond and Middle Range Pond watersheds, the Poland Town forest is valuable for lake protection, wildlife habitat, timber harvesting, and outdoor recreation. The trails have been built cooperatively by the town's recreation department, town forester and other volunteers to provide a  rewarding outdoor recreation experience in Poland. More trails are planned for the near future so be on the lookout for additional trails.

Daniel Schellinger owned much of the Bragdon Hill property in the 1800s and ran a small hill farm. The New England Forestry foundation purchased this property from the Omega Wellness Group and Fred A. Huntress, Jr. in 2010. Mr. Huntress managed several forests for NEFF through his career with an emphasis on growing high quality saw logs. A discontinued town road runs through the middle of the 222 acre property, and is part of the easternmost trail loop.

Trail Tips

Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
Stick to established trails and campsites. If there's no trail, try to walk on rock, gravel, or snow and spread out so that your group doesn't create a trail.

There's a scenic view marked, but we couldn't find it. If you're looking for an overlook, this isn't your spot. But it's a nice stroll through the woods, as long as you bring your bug stuff in the spring and early summer. Very wet conditions, even in a dry period.

The map here has some inaccuracies. First, the only reliable parking is at the North Raymond trailhead. Second, the trails that come out on the White Oak Hill road don't exist. The bottom one is the Bragdon Hill Road, a rutted 4wd track that once was a town road. The top one doesn't exist at all. At this point no trails north of the Bragdon Hill Road have been blazed for safe use. Hikers should check the kiosk at the No. Raymond Rd. for an accurate map of the area. Happy Hiking.
