Mailbox Guidelines

Our plow drivers are warned to take all precautions to avoid striking mailboxes with the wing of the plow. Below are some tips for mailbox placement to help reduce the chances of your mailbox being struck during the winter months.

Place reflective material on the side of the mailbox which is facing traffic, also, 4" letters will make it easier for emergency vehicles to see your home address.

Posts for the mailbox must not exceed a width of 4" by 4" and 2" diameter for all steel or metal posts. Posts that are more substanial in construction are considered "Deadly fixed objects" and they are prohibited within the town roadway.

All mailboxes must be fixed at least 42 inches above the ground to provide clearence for plow wings. We recommend that you use an extended arm mailbox post because it is less likely to get hit by a plow.

Please place the mailbox on the farside of your driveway away from all approaching traffic, this will allow our drivers to properly clear next to your mailbox as close as possible to reduce the amount of shoveling and to clear a path for the postal carrier.

For uncurbed roadways set the mailbox back at the far edge of the road shoulder to tprovide the maximum possible roadway clearance. For curbed roads the face of the mailbox should be 8-12 inches back from the curb face.
