The youth softball program is a developmental program for girls age 7-18.  It is divided into 3 teams; Farm League for girls 7-10, Little League for girls 10-13, and Senior League for girls ages 13-18.  The division of these teams is based on number of participants and skill level.  Girls age 7 may play softball; however, we recommend anyone age 7 who has not played tee-ball, play tee-ball for at least one season.  Dependent on the skills after 1 year of tee-ball we may recommend a 7 year old girl to play one year of rookie baseball before moving on to softball.  This is all assessed on an individual basis. (girls intending to play rookie baseball must attend the skills assessment on March 29;  at the Poland Regional H.S. gym)

Farm League
In farm league softball the players pitch to each other.  Coaches will focus on pitching, hitting and fielding instruction while giving a basic understanding of the rules of the game.  Teams will practice at least once a week and have a game at least once a week.  Participants may have the opportunity to play several different positions while developing new skills.  Games will be umpired by parent/coach volunteers.  Although score will be kept we will emphasize on achieving team goals during games.

Little League
In Little League the players also pitch to each other, but from a greater distance.  The practices will focus on advanced hitting, pitching and tactical fielding.  At this level the players will learn how to slide and steal bases.  Games will be more competitive and  focused more on team performance.  Umpires will be hired to officiate each game to add consistancy to the game.  Coaches will decide the number of practices per week (generally 1-2). The league will decide the number of games they will play per week (generally 2) .

*Note: softball is a team sport that requires positioning of players. Coaches are responsible to place players based on safety, skill level and desire.  Parents are welcome to give feedback to the coach with the understanding that the coach makes the final decision on player positioning.

Senior League
This league is designed for Middle/ High School students that 1.) love the game and did not make it on a school team and want to play 2.) Play on a school team but want more game time and training.  This program varies in intereste from season to season.  The development of this league will be based on player interest and coaching availablility.

Note:  The Poland Recreation Department reserves the right to cancel programs based on # of registrants/ availability of coaches and facility use.
