In 1995 a group of Poland citizens met at the Poland Community Church Parish House on Maine Street, Poland Corner, to form a committee with the intention of organizing a Historical Society for the town of Poland. This was the first of its kind for Poland. By-laws were adopted which stated that membership is open to all, regardless of residence, and set the dues at $5 per year. The group started with 17 charter members. A Memorial Fund was also set up in memory of deceased members.
The first officers were elected - President, David Tedford, Vice President, Arthur Greely, and Clerk/Treasurer, Beverly Tripp (who held that office until 2001). Five members formed the board of trustees and an entertainment committee was also formed.
The meetings were held every month from that point on at various locations. In May 1998 the old One Room Schoolhouse, that was once located next to the store at the corner of White Oak Hill road and Rte 26 at Poland Corner was moved to its present location, next to the Town Hall and Town Office. After 5 years of helping to restore the building with the Town and the help of many donors and citizens of the town, in the summer of 2003 we had the opportunity to relocate the Society to the old Schoolhouse and use it as our Headquarters. Finally we had “a place to call our own.”
Since then, we have had many monthly speakers, fundraising events, and open houses. We attend meetings with other Historical Societies when the opportunity arises, to learn as much as we can on many subjects that will hopefully help us to make the Schoolhouse a more interesting place to visit.
We are open to visitors one day each week during July and August, and by appointment when requested. Please feel free to call us if you would like a tour.
We are a growing society.
Feel free to stop by and see our exhibits or just to say hello anytime!
